Travel Myths Debunked - Travel Tips to Ignore

In the travel writing industry, there are certain myths and rumors that never seem to go away. Some of these ideas are simply outdated-relics of an era when air travel and travel in general were entirely different-and some are just things that seem like good ideas, but which don't hold up in practice. Meanwhile, there are other "cheap travel tips" that, while they may save you a few bucks, will have a tremendously negative effect on your travel experience. So, let's look at some of these common tips with a more critical eye.

"Book early": In general, it is a good idea to start planning your trip as early as possible, and it never hurts to start checking fares and hotel rates for great deals. But the days are gone when buying early automatically gave you access to cheaper rates. Today, especially in this economy, many airlines and hotels are having trouble booking to full capacity, which often leads them to dramatically lower prices in the days leading up to a flight or a hotel occupancy. Of course, you can't rely on this, so the best advice is simply to snatch up deals when you see them, and don't feel too bad if the price goes down later.

"Pretend you're from somewhere else": This one has been going around for the last few years-that if you're from the U.S., you should pretend you're from Canada, or at least that you're from a more internationally respected part of the U.S. like one of the big cities. But this is, of course, ridiculous. Contrary to popular belief, Americans are not the world's rudest tourists by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, without naming names, there are a few European and Asian countries whose tourists have much worse reputations.

So, be the kind and considerate person you are, and represent your country well."Traveling in the developing world is dangerous": Of course, this varies from place to place, but American world-travelers are often surprised by how safe it is in developing countries like India, Brazil, Iran, and countless others. In fact, statistics show that you're more likely to be a victim of crime in countries like the U.K., Holland, and New Zealand than you are in these other places. We can all benefit by letting go of our prejudices.

By and large, people in the developing world are kind, intelligent, open-minded, and no different from the rest of us."Train travel in Europe is best": When you're traveling around Europe, there are some routes that are best taken by train, but this is becoming less and less true. These days, even short trips are often cheaper and quicker by plane. Going from London to Paris, for instance, is almost twice as expensive when you take the Chunnel train. So, when you're planning your trip, don't just look at one or the other.

Put your flight and train options into one big pool, and choose whichever is cheaper for each segment of your trip.

Travel Insurance For Europe - Safeguarding Against Emergency Expenses

Adventures in far flung destinations including Europe can be full of excitement, beauty, history and culture, transporting travelers blissfully away from their daily routines. However, there are times on such journeys when the unexpected happens, and the impact of injury or accident can be much more substantial than if the same incident had occurred stateside. Travel insurance for Europe is available to travelers who will be visiting the EU zone and might need special care from European doctors or healthcare providers during their visit.

Specifically, this type of coverage can help alleviate the danger of incurring massive financial harm due to unpredictable events while traveling in countries like France or Germany where health-care systems are often very similar due to EU-organized regulations. This is something everyone venturing to Europe should investigate prior to their voyage. European travel insurance plans are specifically designed to cover countries like France, Spain, Germany, and Greece. Since health care plans and systems are unique to regions and continents, a European travel insurance package will cover very different things than one for, say, South America.

Some travelers may be surprised to learn that the personal insurance coverage they enjoy at home may be inadequate protection while they are away in Europe. For example, travelers who engage in certain types of hazardous recreation such as scuba diving and mountain climbing may learn the hard way that their coverage has been negated by such activity when done in foreign lands. It is also important to note that even when traveling within a country with a nationalized system of healthcare -- especially in the Euro Zone -- a traveler may be wholly ineligible for free or low cost medical treatment in the case of accidental injury, which is often provided only to citizens.

The European Union has done a very good job of organizing special travel insurance systems so that travelers can feel safe within their borders. This is much like the opposite arrangement where a traveler from Europe might come to the United States of America. Regardless of what state that individual mind find himself or herself, then he or she can still get great coverage. Likewise for you, it's important that regardless of what European "state" you find yourself in that you can rely on quality coverage.

In some of the European areas outside the EU zone, for example, foreign medical practitioners and facilities may be utterly unwilling to negotiate with a traveler's domestic insurance carrier for payment of expenses incurred due to accidents abroad. In such cases, upfront payment may be demanded prior to service. In the event appropriate treatment is unavailable in a particular location and medical evacuation is required, a tourist's conventional domestic insurance policy may not cover the cost, which can be significant.

Because of these reasons and more, travel insurance Europe is a worthwhile subject of inquiry for all seeking to venture abroad. This is important to keep in mind if your European travel plans might lead you outside the EU zone into countries like Switzerland or Norway where EU coverage may or may not apply.Aimed at offering financial compensation for unanticipated expenses attendant to overseas travel, European travel insurance is obtainable in a wide array of types and levels, depending on the type of journey intended by the insured.

Trip duration, itinerary items, and destination region all are factors in determining the type of coverage that will be made available for purchase. Often, policies covering shorter trips may be selected concurrently with the travel reservations. However, a more expansive policy of longer term may be advisable, and such coverage can also be found. Large insurance companies, cruise lines, travel directors are all viable conduits for purchasing this type of product. European travel plans are much more common as a package these days, especially since many Americans and Canadians travel to the EU region during periods like Spring Break and summer holidays.

Travel insurance for Europe is also often typically categorized by the sort of tourist to be covered. Like the EuRail pass system, European travel insurance can sometimes organized by euro-regions and country packages. For example, you might be planning only to visit Mediterranean countries like Italy, Spain, and Portugal, but not northern Euro countries like Holland and England. These customized European packages are a great way to save money! Adventurists, students, business travelers and vacationers all have different insurance needs, and policies are available that reflect that fact.

Travel insurance often addresses expenses relating to emergency medical circumstances, dental services, accidental death or injury benefits, and where necessary, funeral costs when death occurs abroad. Exclusions common to this type of policy might include preexisting health issues and any injury or death occurring as a result of drug or alcohol usage. Please keep in mind that European travel packages are very different from generalized worldwide travel insurance combo packages where multitudes of countries and regions are included at a discounted or "bulk rate.

" In many cases, you are far more likely to get higher quality coverage from the European bundle packages because they provide specific coverage measures for the Euro-zone.

Travel Deals and Discounts - Discover Why Traveling in 2010 Will Continue to Have Cheaper Rates

There are no guarantees in this life for 2010 except a few sure things, taxes and cheaper travels for everyone. For families that love discounted travel and better travel deals for vacations, the deals will continue to pour out. And this is not just coming from some expert travel analysis overview of the travel industry, but rather yet coming directly from CEOs of major travel companies. For instance Stein Kruse, CEO of Holland America Line (cruise industry) says, " The deals and discounts will continue in 2010," which means better travel discounts for all travelers.

The recession of the U.S. hasn't turned around yet for many travel companies and many are starting to re-focus on what really drives their business; the traveling customers.Chairman of Sandals and Beach Resorts, Gordon Butch Stewart stated, "Let's start with the idea that whatever we do, our service and satisfaction levels will have to improve. So we started a degree of restructuring."Companies are now restructuring their way of doing business to drive traveling consumers back to their hotels, airlines, cruises and resorts.

And for once, consumers are really benefiting from this instantly. This means cheaper travel discounts and less cost per person will continue throughout 2010 with no sign of price rises, making travel that much cheaper and affordable to all.Robert Joselyn, CEO of Joselyn Tepper and Associates, recently spoke to Travel Weekly magazine with this to say, "But first, agencies need to have an increased focus on their existing client base. Don't lose touch with clients. Communicate with those folks more often and in a more personal way.

"Finally, they're listening to our complaints, comments and suggestions. Consumers now have the edge in travel, not the companies. We can use this towards our advantage for demands in better pricing and service.Shirley Tafoya, President, North America of Travelzoo, recently stated, "Look at consumer spending. People are definitely saving more. The decrease in travel spending is causing angst among suppliers, causing more deals to come into the market."More deals to come into the market, wow! It just keeps getting better and better everyday.

Travel agents are becoming more of a favorable choice to bargain with mainly because of their friendly customer service and access to unlimited travel deals. Just partner up with the right one and he/she will easily flood you with an avalanche of deals to knock your socks off.So start planning for your 2010 family vacations now, travel deals and discounts are very affordable nowadays. Several years ago, the average household was spending on average $3000 annually on vacations. Expect that figure to decrease dramatically around $2000 or less per family primary because consumers are now the demand for the travel industry, and not the vendors.

First Stop to the Tulips Time Festival in Holland - Windmill Island

The Orchestra Parade (or Muziekparade) in Holland made a remarkable impression on me and my friends even more than our visit to the Nelis' Dutch Village and Windmill Island in Holland. Having lived in large cities, perhaps we had come to expect more entertainment than what was offered to tourists; but still, we had a great time and enjoyed every moment while visiting the imitation of the Dutch Village Netherlands and the Authentic Windmill.I had been in Holland, Michigan before, but it was a long time ago, so I was glad to go back - especially in such difficult economic times when traveling far from home is difficult.

The three-hour drive to Holland for a mini-vacation this time was well worth it.It was a last day of Tulips Time Festival with a Meijer Muziekparade. This festival is for people who love flowers and enjoy seeing dance performed in wooden shoes. Despite an unusually windy, rainy day, we started with a visit to Windmill Island. The parade was supposed to start at two p.m., so we had ample time to spend on Windmill Island. We walked through a row of reproduction old-style Dutch storefronts, such as you would see in Amsterdam, and a replica of Dutch bridge over a canal, leading to the tulip field and the real windmill.

A guided windmill tour is offered during the Tulip Festival. Surprisingly, we had to wait in line for some time to be able to enter the "De Zwaan," a 248-year-old working Dutch windmill. The windmill's name is Dutch for "The Swan" or "Graceful Bird." It is the only authentic, working Dutch windmill in the United States. The story of this remarkable windmill's arrival to the United States is quite interesting. Holland, Michigan residents Willard Wichers and Carter Brown were looking for a way to pay homage to the city's Dutch heritage, so they started a project to bring a Dutch windmill to the United States.

However, many windmills had suffered serious damage in World War II, and the Dutch government banned the sale of windmills outside the Netherlands.Wichers and his group were able to gain an exemption by selecting a heavily damaged mill known as De Zwaan. In 1961, Holland businessman Carter Brown orchestrated the relocation of an authentic windmill from the Netherlands as a memorial to the city's Dutch heritage. As a result of Wichers' and Brown's efforts, in October, 1964, De Zwaan arrived to USA.

It took approximately six months to reconstruct the mill after its deconstructed arrival. The windmill tour was guided by a local elderly woman dressed in a Dutch costume. Her description captivated our attention. Each of five floors has a different story. We spent several minutes at the observation balcony enjoying a nice peaceful view of the park and colorful tulip fields below. Per agreement, Windmill Island still runs the windmill at least one day per year and still grinds flour and bags with flour selling out quickly.

In addition, we visited a Posthouse museum (a replica of a fourteenth-century wayside inn), where we saw a reproduction of the Dutch house room. Windmill Island features beautiful gardens with approximately 150,000 tulips in bloom, including even "Queen Night," a black tulip. We observed a very fine diorama of a Dutch village located in one of the storefronts. Also, there was an antique carousel with handmade wooden horses, and a working antique Amsterdam street organ. We finished our tour by visiting souvenir shops and buying unique gifts to remember our visit to Windmill Island.

We also stopped by a tiny greenhouse. After our visit to Windmill Island, we were excited to head to the last of the three Tulip Time Festival Parades in Holland, Michigan. We were fortunate to find a place to park the car and an excellent place to watch the parade exactly across from a local TV station recording this remarkable event.©Rachel Madorsky

The Green Elf of Giethoorn in Holland

Giethoorn is located in the area of nature reserves in de Wieden of Overijssel in northeast of Holland. People in any cities of Holland can first get to Steenwijk station by train and then go there by taking bus 70 or renting a bike. Giethoorn is known as Holland's Venice. This time, I do not have time to go to Italy to have a look at Venice, but having a look at Holland's region of rivers and lakes is also so good. As of the name of "Giethoorn", it is said that the earliest peat workers find many wild goat angles when they mine coal.

Giethoorn is famous for its thatched hut, the sunlight-proof and rain-proof reed roof which makes the room warm in winter and cool in summer is the substitute of bricks and tiles which the poor could not afford before. Now the price is dozens of times of the bricks and tiles, becoming the building materials which only the rich man can afford. People who are not the inhabitants here are not allowed to buy houses here because here is inside the nature reservation. So it is impossible to buy a thatched hut for spending holidays here.

The majority of hotels distribute in the village periphery. In the village, the dining rooms and shops are on the west bank while the rich live in on the east bank facing the river. You can charter a boat or rent a bike here for playing. Of course, you can walk. Considering it being a area full of water, naturally we choose the boat. Although the children encountered in the dam tell us that the lake is just so so and there are many mosquitoes, we still choose to travel the great link as it is not easy for us from so distant place to come here.

Renting a power boat with a map of summary, we start a journey to explore the village of Giethoorn. It is easy to operate the boat and the waterway is one-way, so you need not to worry about collision. There are also clear signs at the road forks. Holland America Line Review - To the US and Beyond

The Holland America Line is one of the longest-standing cruise lines on the planet, having been founded more than 130 years ago. Founded in the Dutch port of Rotterdam it provided services to the Americas, and initially was known as the Dutch-America Steamship Company. It played a major part in early European immigration to the United States, with a total of more than 850,000 passengers taking the opportunity to become part of the then still-young nation. For the first twenty years of its life, the Holland America Line was concerned with passenger and freight transport, but in 1895 it began the service for which it is now known - vacation cruises.

It was much later, in 1971, that it brought an end to its direct transatlantic services and two years later it sold off its cargo shipping arm, becoming concerned solely with its cruise package. In 1989 it was purchased by the Carnival corporation, and has become part of the overall Carnival family which is also now the subsidiary owner of another venerable passenger line, the Cunard crusie line. Its 14 ships today travel to seven different continents, and carry 700,000 passengers each year - an average total of 50,000 passengers per ship.

Among this fleet is the Prinsendam, a luxury liner purchased from the Seabourn line which carries 793 passengers. Among its other interests are the Alaska and Yukon-based Westmark hotel chain, the Gray Line bus companies of Seattle and Alaska and its own private island - the Caribbean hideaway of Little San Salvador Island, which has been renamed Half Moon Cay by the company. Nearly all Holland America cruises that pass through the area stop at Half Moon Cay for at least one day.The chairman of Carnival Corp.

, Micky Arison (son of Carnival founder Ted Arison), has recently stated that no new ships will be built for the Holland America Line until such time as an improvement is seen in the global financial situation. This still leaves a weighty fleet, of course, and there is no immediate concern over the future of the line. Indeed the company can still boast proudly of a service operation that sees each ship having nearly one crew member for every two guests on their cruises - allowing a real feel of convenience and quality.

This commitment to quality is borne out by the numerous awards won by the line garnered by its well-reputed level of service. The Holland America cruise ship line is pitched at the higher end of the market, with the company's website expressing its determination to provide an enriching experience for its customers. This is borne out in its portfolio of activities, with the Prinsendam for example offering gourmet cooking lessons and a well-stocked library, and all its ships priding themselves on the high quality menu served in an elegant atmosphere.

It is towards this end of the market that Holland America cruises will continue to direct its operations, and with over 130 years of shipping experience they as much as anyone can be trusted to provide a continuing high level of service.

Enjoying the Christmas Markets of Holland

Holland has a number of Christmas markets, offering travelling Britons the chance to enjoy some traditional European culture and browse unique Christmas gifts.Every December a number of Christmas markets are opened throughout Holland, from the markets of Amsterdam to the more out of the way markets in Deventer and Dordrecht, with each area boasting an assortment of Christmas items such as traditional food and hand painted Christmas ornaments. For a Christmas market with a lively atmosphere, festive revellers can visit Winterland Maastricht.

For six weeks, the Vrijthof in Maastricht is transformed into a festive square, with a Christmas market, an ice rink, Ferris wheel and a carousel. What's more there are other seasonal attractions including over 50 stalls with many selling traditional, seasonal Dutch food and drink such as oliebollen, poffertjes and Gluhwein, as well as a number of exciting Christmas gift ideas. One of the most anticipated annual festive events that takes place in Holland is the international Christmas Market Fluweelengrot (Velvet Cave) in Valkenburg.

Constructed around a distinctly fairytale-like theme, the market presents Christmas scenes from various spots around the globe. The event produces a wonderful atmosphere, perhaps owing to being located in the caves. Furthermore, if you choose to take a walking tour through the market, you will find this will lead you to an impressive 18th century chapel, located in an illuminated Christmas Cave. The historic centre of Deventer also transforms into a Christmas city every year during the festive season.

While the Christmas Market grabs most people's attention, there is also a Dickens Festival that draws its fair share of revellers, featuring many characters from the 19th century writer's novels.Of course, many people who travel to Holland for some festive fun decide to stay in the capital, Amsterdam. The Museum Quarter, or Museumplein, is turned into a Christmas Square every year, boasting a market and craft making displays, perfect for passing an afternoon. There is also an ice rink which is open well into the evening, and an evening stroll in any direction from the brightly illuminated tree in Dam Square can prove to be a pleasant one, especially through the Leidseplein and its surrounding area or towards the Jordaan which is full of cosy cafes and unique shops.

Travelling from the UK to Holland this festive season couldn't be easier. Simply hop on a ferry and you and your family can enjoy filling your car full of Christmas treats purchased from the Christmas Markets in Holland, before returning home.

Day Trips and Tours in Holland

Compared with France, Germany, the UK, or the US, The Netherlands may seem small, but it is full of interesting places to visit outside of Amsterdam. There are many Holland tours available as day trips from Amsterdam, as well as longer tours in Holland that spend significant time outside the country's largest city.Holland Tours to The HagueThe Hague is a very popular spot for day trips and longer visits. It is the third largest city in the country and also the seat of government. The Dutch constitution requires that Amsterdam be the technical capital, but The Hague is where all government business occurs, where the queen resides, and where all foreign embassies are located.

One of the most interesting attractions in The Hague is the United Nations judicial courts and infrastructure. Whenever the United Nations convenes a tribunal or a special court, it is held in The Hague.Exploring RotterdamJust a short drive away from Amsterdam visitors will discover Rotterdam. The heart of the city was bombed during World War II by the Nazi Luftwaffe, forcing the Dutch army to surrender and allowing Hitler to move forward. Ultimately, the damage caused by the bombing began to be repaired, and today tours in Holland show a rebuilt city center and business districts.

The new architecture is beautiful and striking, built by some of the newest visionaries in Europe. Renewed and refreshed, Rotterdam is an ascendant hotspot.DelftMade famous by the painter Vermeer, this small city is a beautiful example of classical Dutch architecture. The city center is crisscrossed with canals that are home to fish and flowering lilypads, creating a picturesque setting that photographs beautifully. In addition, there are old buildings and museums that easily merit this city's inclusion on Holland tours.

Traditional Costumes and Lifestyles in VolendamIn Volendam, the traditions of old Holland continue to thrive. The women's costume of Volendam is among the most widely recognized Dutch costumes, and the old fishing customs are still in force. Volendam was originally a town of fishermen and their families, founded upon traditional ideals. Visitors can explore a museum highlighting the town's history and showing the origins of its unique dress, and also get a photo taken in the distinctive traditional costumes.

Wooden Houses of MarkenFormerly an island, there is now a causeway connecting Marken with the rest of Holland. Tours here must connect through that bridge, but after the drive visitors are rewarded with some of the best examples of wooden houses in Holland.Planning a VisitTravelers from other countries often overestimate how long it will take to travel between areas in Holland, but anyone seeking tours in Holland should plan carefully if intending to cover a large amount of the country. It is possible to see all the sights within a reasonably short period of time, but a tight schedule typically must be maintained and planning must be done beforehand.

Many find it easier to consult a planning company for advice rather than trying to orchestrate all details with no assistance.

Summer in Holland

Strike up the band and party all summer in Holland! With band concerts in Kollen Park, the Street Performers and Summer Concert Series downtown, and our Summer Repertory Theatre at Hope College, Holland will entertain you everywhere you turn.
Too pooped to party? Then avail yourself of a relaxing day at the beach, a cruise on the lake, or a picnic on Windmill Island. Enjoy a meal “al fresco” at many of our restaurants, including some with waterfront dining. And speaking of food, our renowned Farmer’s Market is not only bursting with summer produce, but also features the Chef Series in which local chefs give away their culinary secrets.
Special events abound! Get active with the Lake Macatawa Duathlon, a fishing tournament, and the Holland 100 Bike Tour. Don’t know what to do with the kids? Check out the special summer activities at Dutch Village and the Holland Museum, and don’t forget the fireworks on Independence Day and the Ottawa Country Fair in July. Finish off your summer with Art in the Park, the Vintage Boat Show, the Tulipanes Latino Art and Film Festival, and the Civil War Muster.
Rub on the sun screen, stretch out the hamstrings, and work up an appetite — Holland has an exciting summer waiting for you!
